About our programme

The City and Guilds programme is founded on key principles:

  • Developing as a reflective practitioner
  • Meeting the Standard for Chartered Teacher
  • Gaining a qualification at SCQF Level 11, a Master’s level qualification.

In addition like all City and Guilds programmes and qualifications it is firmly founded on work-based practice.

The programme structure is matched to a Master’s level qualification (SCQF Level 11) but in a way that gives flexibility to candidates to base their study and practice on their own needs and those of their school.

Programme Structure

Unit 1, the introductory stage, is compulsory in all programmes. With us it is effectively a double module.

The Work-based Project is also compulsory in all programmes. It is a four module equivalent project and is very common in Master’s level programmes across a range of disciplines.

Unit 2 is unique to the City and Guilds programme. It is effectively a 6 module equivalent award. As such it can be broken down into three double module equivalent stages but Unit 2 should still be seen as a whole. Over the course of Unit 2 candidates will require to show that they meet the Standard for Chartered Teacher in its entirety. By focusing on three or four major areas of practice they will evidence their meeting of the Standard in a holistic way. We suggest that candidates can evidence their meeting the Standard progressively across these three or four major areas of practice by a process of

  • Reflection
  • Planning
  • Discussion with their tutor
  • Working to an agreed plan.

Each major area of practice will allow candidates to evidence at least 10 elements of the Standard. Their work over Unit 2 will allow them to meet the Standard progressively and holistically with opportunities for reinforcement and deepening of knowledge, skills and values.

Meeting the elements of the Standard over three areas of practice can be illustrated in a diagram. This shows that there could be considerable overlap in meeting elements of the Standard.

Starter papers to support a range of areas of practice have been developed as Indicative Development Areas. They include Curriculum Change, Assessment is for Learning, Numeracy across the Curriculum and Citizenship and Inclusion.

There will be three assessment opportunities each at the double module equivalent stage. City and Guilds will award 30 SHE M points at those stages. Currently each 30 SHE M point award receives a salary enhancement.
